ABOUT THE ARTIST

Matania was an Italian painter, born in Naples, the son of a successful artist and illustrator. After beginning his career in Italy, he moved to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century before moving to London to cover the coronation of Edward VII for The Graphic magazine.

He subsequently went on to work for various British publications and continued to cover important royal occasions right up until the early 1950's. During the first world war, he was acknowledged for his realistic depictions of life in the trenches. He continued to live and work in Britain as an artist, illustrator and designer until his death in 1963.
