Caricature by George Wachsteter (1911-2006) of `The Nurses` for Sunday April 28, 1963 cover of The New York Journal-American TView Section. Starring Zina Bethune as young nurse Gail Lucas & Shirl Conway as veteran nurse and mentor Liz Thorpe, both who experience the highs and lows of working at Alden General Hospital in the CBS-TV prime time drama. The series debuted Sept 27, 1962 and ran until May 11, 1965. The show then moved to ABC in Fall 1965 and was retooled as a daytime soap with Bethune and Conway reprising their roles.

Includes two inked versions on 22.00" x 14.00" illustration board, with the image measuring to 14.00" x 9.50." Medium includes photostat layout with watercolor on paper overlay, and copies of the original magazine and covers. Minor soiling.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

 

From the dawn of TV, from 1937 to 1967, George Wachsteter (1911 - 2004) was a prominent in-demand American illustrator and caricaturist. Next to Al Hirschfeld, Wachsteter was one of the most visible American theatrical caricaturists at the time. He produced theatrical, radio, television and film related images for the 3 major radio and television networks, NBC, CBS and ABC. Wachsteter's humorous and elegant line drawings were seen displayed in almost every American living room through the syndicated TV View guide, and prominently placed in most major newspapers, including the Times, Herald Tribune, New York Journal American, and New York World-Telegram. A gradual loss of his vision ended his career prematurely in the late 1960s.
