ABOUT THE ARTIST

Victor C. Anderson was the son of the Hudson River School painter, Frank Anderson. Although his father died when he was only eight, Victor drew and painted from an early age and by the time he attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, he was advanced enough to go directly into life drawing class. In the summer he studied with Birge Harrison in Woodstock, New York.

His illustrations soon appeared regularly in the old Life magazine, usually of homespun, rural subjects with a whimsical edge, and he was a contributor of their covers and the double center spreads for many years. He also appeared in Woman’s Home Companion, The Ladies’ Home Journal, American Magazine, Collier’s Weekly, Country Gentlemen, Woman’s World and many other magazines. Anderson also illustrated two children’s books, Tommy Trot’s Visit to Santa Claus and the Moonbeam Wish Book.

During these same years, Anderson was painting landscapes for exhibition; he showed at the National Academy, the Salmagundi and the Grand Central Galleries in New York.
