ABOUT THE ARTIST

Charles Shepard Chapman was an illustrator and painter whose compositions convey a feeling of spaciousness and dignity. The effect is partly achieved through his use of scale, but subject matter also contributed. He was interested in the beauty of nature, especially in forest subjects, painted with much imagination and experimentation in textural and color effects.

Chapman was born in Morristown, New York, and attended the New York School of Art, studying under William Merritt Chase and Walter Appleton Clark. He and Harvey Dunn conducted a school of illustration in Leonia, New Jersey, for several years in the 1910s. He also taught at the Art Students League, exhibited regularly and won many awards. His painting, “In the Deep Wood,” was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
