ABOUT THE ARTIST

Albert E. Sterner was a versatile performer in many media, including pen and ink, watercolor, oils, lithography, pastel, etching, monotype, crayon, red chalk and charcoal.

Born in London, Sterner studied on a scholarship at the Birmingham Art Institute. He came to America at seventeen to start his career working as a scene painter, then went on to lithography and drawing for engravers on wood blocks.

By 1885, Sterner had moved to New York and begun illustrating for the old Life, St. Nicholas, and Harper’s magazines. Sterner became art editor for Munsey’s Weekly and later a staff member of The Century magazine. He also taught at the Art Students League, the school of the National Academy of Design, and the New York School of Applied Design for Women. During his long career he also received commissions to paint portraits of members of socially prominent families, including the Vanderbilts, the Lamonts, and the Whitneys.

Sterner was president of the Society of Illustrators in 1907 and 1908 and was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1934.
