"The ragged edges of Manhattan. . . the rowdy brothels, the dirty hallways, the seething streets of Yorkville -- this was where Mattie Dolan grew up and this is where he learned about life." Cover illustration for "The Future Mr. Dolan" by Charles Gorham (Pyramid Books, 1949).

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rudy Nappi was the principal cover artist for the US Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series in the 1950s through to the late 1970s. His portrayals of the three main characters were regarded as the images most recognizable. In 1968, six out of eight titles were published when MacDonald took over the reigns, and the dust jackets featured Nappi's work.

Nappi drew the covers for six other original series in 1980 in the volumes: 50, 51, 53-56. The softcover Hardy Boys Adventure Activity Book and the revised edition of The Hardy Boys Detective Handbook show Nappi's handiwork.

Nappi also created covers for the collectible puzzle books.

Starting with Sampson Low, who used 14 of his cover illustration, a large portion of Nappi's portfolio was employed by British publishers.
