ABOUT THE ARTIST

Arthur E. Becher was born in Germany, and brought by his parents to Milwaukee at the age of eight. After high school, he worked for a lithography firm and studies art with local teachers. He also joined a local sketch club whose members included carl Sandberg, Herman Pfeifer, William Aylward and Edward Steichen, under the tutelage of Louis Mayer. Becher, Aylward and Pfeifer all later become students of Hoard Pyle; Becher enrolled in the Wilmington school in 1902 and 1903. In 1908, in London on assignment by Appleton's magazine, he took advantage of the opportunity to go to Germany where he studied further under Otto Strutzel in Munich.

Becher contributed illustrations regularly to magazines such as The Ladies' Home Journal, Scribner's, McCall's, and Pictorial Review, and many of his pictures had an allegorical theme or accompanied poetry. Although much of his work was done with carbon or charcoal pencil, he was a good colorist and worked in oils at a large scale. He also painted landscapes and exhibited them occasionally; he was a member of the Society of Illustrators, the Artists Guild and the Salmagundi Club.
