ABOUT THE ARTIST
Frederic Kimball Mizen was a dominant figure in the billboard advertising field for several years, many of his paintings doubling as magazine advertisements. He also illustrated fiction for magazines such as Cosmopolitan and The Saturday Evening Post, but is probably best known for his long and distinguished series of advertising paintings for the Coca-Cola Company in newspapers, magazines and billboards.
A Chicagoan, Mizen attended Smith’s Art Academy from 14-6, and obtained his first employment with the Gunning System, a predecessor to General Outdoor Advertising. Meanwhile, he continued to study in evening classes at the Art Institute of Chicago under John Vanderpoel, DeForrest Shook and Walter Marshall Clute.
He later conducted his own school, the Mizen Academy of Art, for several years, but eventually restricted himself to portraiture.
