ABOUT THE ARTIST

 

An illustrator, designer, craftsperson who lived in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, Alice Preston was especially known for children's book illustration.  Working for Houghton Mifflin, she illustrated The Green Forest Fairy Book, Whistle for Good Fortune, The Valley of Color Days, Adventures in Mother Gooseland, Peggy in her Blue Frock and Humpty Dumpty House. She also did occasional magazine cover illustration for House Beautiful between 1925 and 1958.

Preston studied at the Massachusetts School of Art, and studied with Vesper George, Henry Snell and Felicie Waldo Howell Art.

Memberships were the Pen & Brush Club, Copley Society, Rockport Art Association, Boston Art Club, North Shore Artists Association, Guild Beverly Artists and Society for Preservation New England Antiquities.
Among her exhibition venues were the Boston Art Club, Copley Society, Pen & Brush Club, Speed Memorial Museum, Rockport Art Association, North Shore Artists Association.
