This charming genre scene depicts a young newlywed couple who have presumably just arrived at an inn by coach. Still clad in their traveling clothes and looking slightly weary, they clasp hands before the warm glow of a fire as the innkeeper prepares to serve them a warm meal.
The scene, which was reproduced in etchings in the early 20th century, perfectly encapsulates Sadler’s signature style. His meticulously staged, sentimental genre scenes placed contemporary subjects within the nostalgic setting of late eighteenth or early nineteenth-century middle-class life. These scenes held widespread appeal, with millions of his prints selling across Europe and the United States. A 1912 Good Housekeeping profile highlights his commercial reach, stating that "Few American homes contain no reproduction of Dendy Sadler’s studies of …”pre-Victorian middle-class life.”
