ABOUT THE ARTIST

 

Walter Godfrey De Maris (1877–1947) was an American illustrator and cartoonist whose work
appeared in many prominent publications in the early 20th century. Following his studies at the
Art Students League of New York in 1900, De Maris established a career contributing
illustrations and cartoons to newspapers and major magazines, including The Saturday Evening
Post, Life, Harper's, and Judge. His professional work also included creating impactful posters
during World War I.
By 1923, De Maris had relocated to the renowned New Rochelle artist community, joining
contemporaries like Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker. Demonstrating adaptability during
the Great Depression, he successfully transitioned his distinctive style to high-circulation pulp
magazines, including Adventure and Short Stories. His artistic legacy continued through his son,
Merril De Maris, who achieved success as a commercial artist and writer for Walt Disney’s
“Snow White and Silly Symphonies.”
