ABOUT THE ARTIST
Walter Godfrey De Maris (1877–1947) was an American illustrator and cartoonist whose workappeared in many prominent publications in the early 20th century. Following his studies at theArt Students League of New York in 1900, De Maris established a career contributingillustrations and cartoons to newspapers and major magazines, including The Saturday EveningPost, Life, Harper's, and Judge. His professional work also included creating impactful postersduring World War I.By 1923, De Maris had relocated to the renowned New Rochelle artist community, joiningcontemporaries like Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker. Demonstrating adaptability duringthe Great Depression, he successfully transitioned his distinctive style to high-circulation pulpmagazines, including Adventure and Short Stories. His artistic legacy continued through his son,Merril De Maris, who achieved success as a commercial artist and writer for Walt Disney’s“Snow White and Silly Symphonies.”
