ABOUT THE ARTIST

David McCall Johnston is a Midwesterner, born in South Bend, Indiana. After completing his studies with honors at the Art Center College of Design in California where he studied with Joseph Henninger and John LaGatta, he returned to the Midwest for his first art job as a studio artist at Art Staff in Detroit, Michigan, in 1964. Eventually, he became a partner in his own Detroit firm, Designers and Painters.

Now a freelance illustrator, he has worked for a wide variety of clients, including Signet, Prentice-Hall, Ballantine Books, Green Willow Press, Bantam, Harper and Row, K-mart Corporation, the Berringer Wine Company, the Mount Rushmore National Monument Society, the Franklin Mint and the Franklin Library. Johnston has also created designs for Steuben Glass, with some pieces collected by museums.

He regularly exhibits his work, which has been included in annual shows of the Art Directors Club in Detroit, winning both Gold and Silver Medals, and the Society of Illustrators in New York.
