ABOUT THE ARTIST

Benjamin Sayre Cory Kilvert was the son of the mayor of his birthplace: Hamilton, Ontario, in Canada. Kilvert migrated to New York at attend classes at the Art Students League. Among his teachers were George Bridgman and Robert Henri. He found early employment as a staff artist for the New York World and later, Collier’s magazine. He also began to submit humorous artwork to Life, Punch, Judge and St. Nicholas magazines and illustrated several children’s books.

During World War I, Kilvert served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, based in London, devising techniques for camouflage. He also developed an interest in map making and created several mural-sized pictorial maps, including one for the Pinehurst Country Club in North Carolina.

Kilvert complemented his illustration career with rural landscape paintings of the Catskill Mountains, street scenes in Charleston, South Carolina, marine paintings in the Biddeford, Maine area, and New York City skylines. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society and the Salmagundi Club in New York where he regularly exhibited.
