ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lucius Wolcott Hitchcock painted in the academic tradition of the Laurens and Colarossi School of Paris where he studied with Lefebvre and Constant. His pictures were extremely well painted, and he was especially effective in presenting the social elite. His work appeared in most of the major magazines, including Scribner’s, Harper’s Monthly and Woman’s Home Companion.
Hitchcock was also a teacher at the Buffalo Society of Artists and the Buffalo Art Students League. Later he taught at the William Chase School at New York.
He was one of the early members in the Society of Illustrators; he also joined the Salmagundi Club and the New Rochelle Art Association. His awards were many, including a Silver Medal for Illustration in Paris in 1900, a Silver Medal for Illustration and a Bronze for Painting at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904.
