Caricature by George Wachsteter (1911-2004) of comedian-singer-banjoist Jerry Van Dyke, brother of Dick Van Dyke, a host for the 1963 new game show `Picture This`, which debuted over CBS-TV on June 25, 1963 as a Tuesday-night summer replacement for `The Jack Benny Program` until it left the air Sept 17, 1963. Critics panned it, some describing it as `an idiotic trifle` that trapped Van Dyke`s talents. Jerry finally hit comedy pay dirt years later as Luther on ABC-TV`s Emmy-winning sitcom, `Coach` (1989-1997). On 14" x 22" illustration board, for the cover of the Sunday, August 4, 1963 New York Journal-American Pictorial Magazine and TView section. Includes original copies of the mag. 14" x 9 1/2" image. From the dawn of TV, from 1937 to 1967, George Wachsteter (1911 - 2004) was a prominent in-demand American illustrator and caricaturist. Next to Al Hirschfeld, Wachsteter was one of the most visible American theatrical caricaturists at the time. He produced theatrical, radio, television and film related images for the 3 major radio and television networks, NBC, CBS and ABC. Wachsteter's humorous and elegant line drawings were seen displayed in almost every American living room through the syndicated TV View guide, and prominently placed in most major newspapers, including the Times, Herald Tribune, New York Journal American, and New York World-Telegram. A gradual loss of his vision ended his career prematurely in the late 1960s.
