Mario Ruben Cooper had several careers in the field of art, each pursued with great enthusiasm and marked by excellence.

Born in Mexico City of Mexican-American parentage, he was reared in Los Angeles and received his education there at the Otis Art Institute and Chouinard Art Institute. He later attended the Grand Central School of Art and Columbia University in New York. Among his teachers were Pruett Carter and Harvey Dunn, Dunn especially influenced his philosophy and point of view.

Cooper was at various times employed in an engraving house; as a visualizer for Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborne; as art director for Lord and Taylor; and as an expert layout man and letterer; before finally obtaining his first commission for an illustration from Collier’s magazine.

As an illustrator, Cooper was noted for the dramatic concepts of his pictures combined with a meticulous rendering usually in colored inks on illustration board. His work appeared in many national magazines but was most closely identified with Collier’s and other Crowell-Collier publications.

Cooper himself taught illustration at the Grand Central School of Art, Columbia University, the National Academy, the Art Students League, and the City College of New York.

He had also been an active watercolorist, President of the American Watercolor Society and the author of several books on watercolor painting techniques.

A parallel interest was sculpture. He studied under Oronzio Maldarelli and executed a number of commissions for churches and other institutions.

A long-time member of the Society of Illustrators, and the National Sculpture Society, Cooper was also a past president of the Audubon Artists.
