ABOUT THE ARTIST

Edward Penfield produced some of America’s finest posters. His clean style and large silhouetted shapes resulted from much careful preliminary refinement and elimination of detail. Horses and coaches were a favorite subject with him, as typified with his picture of the colonial Post Road. A notable series of his illustrations were contained in his book, Holland Sketches, published by Scribner’s in 1907. Another was a series of calendar illustrations based on the 1843 “Old Farmer’s Almanac” and re-drawn in 1918 for the Beck Engraving Company.

Penfield had a profound influence on American illustration through his own work, in his post as art director for Harper’s magazines, and through his teaching at the Art Students League. He was president of the Society of Illustrators in 1921 and 1922 and was elected to the Illustrators’ Hall of Fame in 1998.
