The label affixed to the back of the frame describes the figures as Miss Constance Wilder of Villa Rosa and "a roguish man," an illustration from Jerry Junior by Jean Webster, which chronicles a wealthy American socialite's travels through Europe. It dates the drawing to 1906. The book was originally published in 1907, then reprinted in 1909 and 1920.
