Original cover for Collier's, published October 29, 1921

This striking original Collier's magazine cover depicts a young blonde boy in a red turtleneck, intently repairing a pocket watch. With rosy cheeks and a determined expression, he skillfully maneuvers his tool, tongue peeking from the corner of his mouth, amidst the disassembled watch pieces and tiny screws. One can't help but admire his ingenuity and resolve, even while wondering if this intricate timepiece will ever tick again.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Vermont, Frederic Stanley never took formal art training.  After serving as a soldier in World War I, he sold four paintings in New York City and spent the rest of his career as a successful commercial artist.  The Coca-Cola Company was one of several companies that employed his skill as an illustrator.
