ABOUT THE ARTIST
For years, Walter Martin Baumhofer painted cover designs for the Pulps, such as Adventure magazine, Street & Smith’s magazines, and Popular Publication’s titles. He developed a bold, dramatic approach for them that characterized his subsequent work.
He painted the first series of Doc Savage covers, and depicted a gallery of other western and detective characters. A versatile performer, Baumhofer also illustrated for publications as diverse as The Ladies’ Home Journal, Liberty, Collier’s, Argosy, Esquire, Outdoor Life, Cosmopolitan, True, Woman’s Day, and Sports Afield.
Baumhofer studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, graduating in 1925, and was a long-time member of the Society of Illustrators.
