The Saturday Evening Post Cover Competition, Final Study
In late 1972, The Saturday Evening Post, held a competition to find a replacement for its regular cover artist, Norman Rockwell, as he ended his 57-year tenure in the position. Among the hopefuls was an 18-year-old man named Robert Charles Howe, who submitted self-portraits of the teen-aged hopeful with the old master.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
In 1972, when the Saturday Evening Post organization held a contest for the replacement of their illustrator, Norman Rockwell, Robert Charles Howe, then age 18, won the contest. Of the work he submitted, Rockwell said it was: "better than I was at 18”
Howe also became an illustrator in 1984 of children's books for the publishing house of E.P. Dutton.
